Mount St Joseph High in Manchester is the top Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) school in the island, according to a ranking of the performance in the 2016 exams.

Montego Bay High, the best-performing school on last year's ranking, has tumbled heavily down the 2017 rankings that has seen more non-traditional high schools making leaps.

Last year, the St James-based all-girls institution, which started its sixth-form programme in 2014, was number one with 100 per cent of its students achieving grades one to three in two or more subjects, according to Educate Jamaica's 2017 rankings released yesterday. The percentage of students who met the criteria is now 65 per cent, dragging the school's placement down to 24th.

Mount St Joseph High has taken over the top position, with 100 per cent of its cohort achieving the criteria.

The big jumpers included Jonathan Grant High and Cedar Grove Academy in St Catherine, St George's College in Kingston, Jamaica College in St Andrew, and Belmont Academy in Westmoreland.

CAPE is a pre-university examination offered by the Caribbean Examinations Council. It is a requirement to matriculate into some local and international tertiary-level institutions.

Grades one to five are acceptable passes, but Educate Jamaica said it used grades one to three to highlight the schools that are performing at the highest level.

Educate Jamaica did not provide data on the number of students who made up the cohorts of each school.
