Annotto Bay, St Mary:

An attack in the dead of night on the weekend has left a woman dead and a businessman hospitalised.

A police report is suggesting that about 12:15 a.m. on Sunday, 49-year-old Valrie Richards, a higgler of Gibraltar Housing Scheme in Annotto Bay, St Mary, was a pillion on a motorcycle driven by her 61-year-old friend, a businessman.

Upon reaching a section of the roadway known as Cargill Lane, they were pounced upon by two armed men travelling on foot, who opened fire.

Richards was hit twice, while the businessman was grazed by a bullet.

Richards was pronounced dead at hospital, while her friend is being treated for a gunshot wound.

During a search of the area by the police, three 9mm bullet casings were found, along with two expended bullets.

The police, who are now combing the area to flush out criminals and unlicensed firearms, are also appealing to residents to be alert when travelling at nights, as only last year, the coastal town was rocked by a series of shootings and killings.
