Two still better than too many
THE EDITOR, Sir:
Amid the recent commentaries on abortion, including the right time to terminate a pregnancy, women's rights and making abortion legal, there appears to be silence on the matter of preventing unwanted pregnancies.
Back in the day, as a small child, the 'Two is better than too many' campaign left a mark. It is as clear in my head as if it were replayed on television yesterday.
Terminations are happening amid all the discussions and pontifications. Women are showing up at hospitals for abortions commenced in a doctor's office. It's happening and so are unwanted pregnancies.
I'd like to shift the discussion from the killing of babies to the prevention of unwanted pregnancies. Outside of rape cases, the woman's right should be whether or not she chooses to get pregnant.
Family life programmes, better accessibility to contraception, education and opportunities for the youth, and a revisit of the 'Two is better than too many' campaign are some areas we could make a start. Please stop killing the babies.
