'Cosby Show' still inspirational for blacks

Published:Tuesday | July 14, 2015 | 12:00 AMTHE EDITOR, Sir:

I love The Cosby Show and admired Cliff Huxtable as a role model as a successful black professional raising a family, facing the decisions and struggles of daily life faced by all families.

I am deeply saddened by the allegations against Bill Cosby, who played the lead role, and I empathise with the women who were victims of what appears to be his predatory nature. Being close to the age that most of the women when they were allegedly victimised (17 years old), I empathise with them and I am horrified by Cosby's alleged actions. However, I do not think this should take away from the legacy of The Cosby Show and Cliff Huxtable's role as a model father raising his children.

The Cosby Show broke ground for black people. The show introduced an idea of African-American people that at the time was not known to the world. The Cosby Show should still be held at a high level for the remarkable road paved for the black race. Though this does not excuse Cosby's actions, it is important that we maintain the value of the history of this television programme.
