Commish Quallo much too soft
THE EDITOR, Sir:
I agree with The Gleaner editorial of August 22, 2017, 'Does Mr Quallo have it in him?' After several months in the job, Commissioner George Quallo doesn't seem effective, nor does he appear to be in control.
I mean no disrespect, but he does appear too soft to be holding such a tough police job.
As The Gleaner pointed out in another editorial some time ago, Mr Quallo is not memorable nor charismatic. His presence wouldn't stand out in a crowded room and this may affect his ability to command respect and get things done. How he got selected is beyond me? What exactly were his accomplishments? I am sure he could've been more beneficial in another capacity, just not as police commissioner.
I would've much preferred Deputy Police Commissioner Novelette Grant who showed, in the few months acting as commissioner, that a woman can be just as good, if not better. Her approach was no-nonsense and tough, and her visibility added to her appeal. There was some promise to her approach, considering most criminals are born out of poor family values and circumstances.
As Quallo continues to work out his three-year contract, I don't think the country has much time to spare, nor can ordinary Jamaicans continue to risk the high-level criminal activities now wreaking havoc in people's lives.
