USA, please help us!

THE EDITOR, Sir:

In this newspaper on February 27, 2019, the Page 1 headline jumped out: ‘18 hours of TERROR - Gunmen slaughter eight persons in separate incidents in Westmoreland’.

Then, turning to Page 2, another headline: “Massive gun find at wharf”, with the article going on to report that “police say the shipment originated in the United States but did not share any specifics”.

Before going belly up, I recall that our national airline had to deal with the possibility of huge fines when the ganja plant was found on passengers or as unaccompanied cargo entering the US.

Air Jamaica was punished by the said US for failing to take steps to prevent its citizens from using pot. The Jamaican Government was called out every so often for “failing to take sufficient measures to prevent the cultivation and export of ganja into the US”.

We now call on the United States of America – the richest country in the world, with access to cutting-edge technology, and which can use drones to eliminate enemies halfway around the globe – to take serious measures to halt the export of weapons of mass destruction entering our island.

We are too weak to fine or punish you, America, but the inflow of guns, with your failure to detect them at YOUR ports, has contributed to us being titled one of the most murderous counties in the world.

USA, help us, please!
