St Thomas demands quality jobs

THE EDITOR, Sir:

I must congratulate Dr Orville Taylor on a profoundly well-written article in The Sunday Gleaner of June 30, 2019, titled ‘Morant Bay Revolution’, which hopefully will be read by many of our leaders who are now making promises.

When the Morant Bay Urban Centre becomes a reality, the jobs touted should be given to the many qualified and skilled St Thomas natives, some of whom have had to leave the parish because they could not find worthy jobs in the past.

I refer to the executive positions and not only the peripheral jobs just to say we created 3,000 jobs.

I agree with Dr Taylor that “the policymakers really had no space in their hearts for this historic population”.

Also, I remember well when St Thomas’ water was not good enough for us and so was heavy-handedly taken away amid little protest. St Thomas, being the last, may somehow become the first when the economic boom returns to the parish in the near future.

Keep up the good work!
