Time to vote directly for mayors

The Jamaica Labour Party, in its manifesto, promised to make Portmore the 15th parish of Jamaica. I hope that commitment is met before the next general election, due in 2025. Portmore is the only municipality that votes for its mayor directly and I would like to see that continue. I would also like to see the other municipalities have an opportunity to vote for their mayors directly. The councillors could pick an acting mayor from their caucus if the elected mayor passes away or resigns.

Using the United States as an example, they vote for their president, vice-president, governors and lieutenant governors directly.

On the matter of Portmore becoming our 15th parish, picking its capital and names for its three constituencies might be difficult or easy. Clearly, Independence City, Waterford, Port Henderson, Bridgeport and Braeton are the front runners to be its capital.
