High time for a referendum on Jamaica’s sovereignty
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I read the editorial in The Gleaner, March 14, ‘Meghan, Harry and Jamaica’s sovereignty’ with great interest. Like any other developing small country, Jamaica has her fair share of problems. However, there are many things which we are proud of and Jamaica is the “Land we love” because of many reasons; one of them is we are ‘Out of Many, One People’.
Jamaica welcomes people of all colours, races, religions with differences in viewpoints, our strong democracy and independent journalism supports it. In recent times, we have seen many problems in developed countries, particularly in Europe and Americas (linked with racism, discrimination and stereotypes). They are, largely speaking, unwelcome by majority of Jamaicans.
We may never know the truth in Harry-Meghan-Baby Archie-skin-colour issue. But my concern is that we may lose the spirit of our national motto: ‘Out of Many, One People’, when we do not give a clear signal towards issues which have far-reaching impact on the Commonwealth and Jamaica’s sovereignty.
This is in the context when our elected governments act in the name of the sovereign, the Queen.
I have nothing against whites. But it is high time that the Government of Jamaica prepares a referendum on the question of our head of state. Let the people of Jamaica decide!
