Change has to come from within

THE EDITOR, Madam:
The two columns in The Gleaner of May 3, one by the Rev Ronald Thwaites and the other by Dr Garth Rattray, speak loudly of a deteriorating state of affairs affecting all levels of our Jamaican society captured in words and phrases such as “corruption”, “disorder”, “right and wrong” ... “good and bad” ...” merging imperceptibly at their borders”.
We continue to seek and pursue short-, medium-, and long-term solutions in various areas, including education, legislation, social reordering and poverty alleviation – and so we should.
Perhaps we should also give careful consideration to the idea that the most important change in an individual’s life must occur from the inside out, not from external circumstances, with results flowing out from the personal level to family and to society.
The Salvation Grace of God through Jesus Christ offers to bring us into a right personal relationship with God and with each other – a crucial reorientation of our allegiance and our relationships, vertical and horizontal.
