Three strikes and you’re out

Perhaps the time has come for the Government of Jamaica to adopt and implement a ‘three-strikes law’, which was implemented during the presidency of Bill Clinton in the United States of America.

In the US, the three-strikes law greatly increases the prison sentences of persons convicted of a felony, who, in the past, were convicted of two or more violent crimes or serious felonies. This law, effectively, ensures that offenders who fall into the latter category will, ultimately, receive life sentences.

I strongly believe that such a law, if implemented in Jamaica, would prove to be, over time, an effective deterrent against major crimes by criminals or persons toying around with the idea.

Serial perpetrators of violent crimes or serious felonies should feel the full brunt of the law, where punishment for those crimes are concerned, in order to, once and for all, put dangerous career criminals ‘out of business’.
