Revisit hasty urban planning before disaster strikes
THE EDITOR, Madam:
As an old country boy, I can relate to the anecdotal references Patricia Green made in her article in the Sunday Gleaner of June 6 titled ‘Development residential architecture and hurricane preparedness’. The science behind her observations is something that even the National Environment and Planning Agency, not to mention the municipal councils/corporations seem to have forgotten in their haste to increase density or build modern.
I believe that her article is very timely and the arguments poignant. Hopefully, the authorities will revisit our building standards to ensure that appropriate amendments are done, as necessary, and enforcement measures may be taken before disaster strikes. I also trust that she will continue this theme in the media and other fora and that other professionals will join her until the necessary changes are implemented.
