St Catherine community needs urgent attention
THE EDITOR, Madam:
This is a plea for help from the St Catherine Municipal Corporation, the member of parliament (MP), the caretaker and the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA).
The Twickenham Gardens/Greendale community in Spanish Town, St Catherine, is in a deplorable condition. The major issues of concern are the median in front of the community; the majority of the roads are in need of urgent repair, having deep potholes; and the pile-up of garbage on empty lots and on some roads.
Two years ago, the citizens’ association initiated a massive clean-up on Labour Day. We continued the clean-up and beautification for several months, with financial contributions from three businesses in the area and members of the citizens’ association.
Much of the work was done by members of the association (senior citizens), but after a while the situation became a waste of time. We would spend hours cleaning up, picking up garbage, and by the next day the situation was even worse. Persons were just dropping trash everywhere. We placed several garbage bins in the area of the median, but they were stolen in a few weeks.
The municipal corporation and/or the NSWMA needs to schedule a team every week to clean the area and to place garbage bins in strategic locations.
This situation is untenable. The citizens’ association has tried to do its part, but the municipal corporation, MP, caretaker and the NSWMA need to step up to the plate.
We are taxpayers and we do not deserve to live in such poor conditions.
