Time to separate climate change and housing ministries
THE EDITOR, Madam:
We have had a housing crisis for decades in Jamaica. Most Jamaicans don’t own a land or a house – they either have to rent a place or live with family or friend or in the worst-case scenario resort to squatting. It is now time for the Government take the housing crisis seriously. They need to have an independent housing ministry, with the urban renewal and add the portfolio of works to that proposed new ministry. I believe current Minister Pearnel Charles Jr is the man who can solve our housing crisis and he should be spearheading this ministry. Also, the Government needs to reorganise the National Housing Trust to provide housing solutions for low-income workers.
Further, I believe in protecting and preserving the environment and keeping our surroundings clean. But at the same time, I am not into this climate change fearmongering. Right now, the climate change portfolio is getting all the attention in a ministry where housing should be first priority.
I strongly believe we should have two separate ministries – one for housing and urban renewal and the other for climate change and environment, so we can effectively deal with both aspects.
