Mandate JPS to carry out inspections
THE EDITOR, Madam:
I refer to The Gleaner article dated November 28, titled ‘JPS shocked by new mandatory inspection rate’. I am in agreement with the call by the Jamaica Public Service Company (JPS) for the Government to establish a set fee for the carrying out of inspections of all residential and commercial buildings before they are supplied with electricity.
In addition to the setting of a fee for the service, I would like to propose that the JPS be given full responsibility to carry out these inspections by means of contract outsourcing – this is pretty much the same way the country’s two major telecommunications providers do.
The fees to be charged for inspection should include GCT; thereby allowing for the removal of the now-in-place inspection fee paid to the Government at the tax office.
I firmly believe that, should the above proposal be acted upon, it would to a great extent help in eliminating most of the perceived corrupt practices carried out by some unscrupulous electricians, acting regrettably in alleged collusion with some government inspectors.
