Politicians and their ‘Hallelujah Veritas’

THE EDITOR, Madam:

With war raging in Ukraine, coupled with supply chain issues and inflation – causing the price of energy, food and all consumer items to soar worldwide – news emerged from Dallas, Texas, on May 19, that a new, non-virulent virus had emerged. No official name has been designated as yet, but it concerns politicians who are traditionally known as manipulators of the truth, regardless of their party affiliation or ideology, and have had this deceitful trait since long before the Dead Sea Scrolls were created.

This new, beneficial ‘virus’ manifested itself from the lips of a former US president at his George W. Bush Institute, when he condemned “the decision of one man to launch a wholly unjustified and brutal invasion of Iraq”. Of course, it’s the very first time that George W. had ever truthfully admitted what happened in 2003, when the Iraq attack was launched to bring about a regime change in Baghdad, where weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) were supposedly pointed at the rest of the world.

REPERCUSSIONS

George W. Bush had the most willing co-conspirators from European and NATO member countries, and his faithful English ‘poodle’, Tony Blair, was right there at his side leading the charge. The result of their chicanery was thousands of military deaths for the invaders, and many hundreds of thousands of civilians slaughtered in a totally unwarranted action in search of non-existent WMDs. The 2003 Iraq attack is having repercussions in the Middle East, and beyond, almost two decades later.

Of course, the former president tried to correct himself, saying that he’d meant to say Ukraine, and was referring not to himself but to President Putin of Russia. The then Texas governor, Ann Richards, was referring to his father when she said at the 1988 Democratic Party Convention: “Poor George, he can’t help it. He was born with a silver foot in his mouth.” Her acerbic observation equally applies to the son, whose misspent youth lasted a decade or more longer than what most of us plebeians experience as normal teenage rebellion. George W. eventually settled down and found religion, and Tony Blair converted to Roman Catholicism after playing his part in the nefarious deception and slaughter in their latter-day Christian crusade into Iraq.

With this in mind, maybe this new virus of politicians fessing up to their crimes and telling the truth should be called the ‘Hallelujah Veritas’. Derived from the Hebrew word meaning to ‘joyously praise’, coupled with Latin for ‘truth is mighty’. Let’s all hope there are many more politicians who succumb to this beneficial virus.
