End exploitation of women and children in Zimbabwe

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is very sad and hurting that most women in Zimbabwe are being exploited sexually, and moreover silenced. There has been an unprecedented increase in the levels of violence against women and President Mnangagwa’s government is not taking meaningful action to address these issues that are putting women at risk.

Alleged politically motivated sexual violence against women is prevalent under Zimbabwe’s current oppressive regime. Women have and continue to be frequent victims of brutality at the hands of police and security forces. They are being subjected to torture, beatings, rape; some of them have disappeared or displaced. Politically affiliated people are resorting to violence. It is worrisome that they are targeting the vulnerable, especially women and children.

Jasmine Toffa, member of parliament of the opposition Citizens Coalition for Change, was brutally attacked by ZANU-PF thugs in the latest spate of politically driven violence.

The corruption-tainted ZANU PF government should stop using violence against women and take tangible actions to stop such deplorable acts.

We do not expect women to leave their homes and go seek refuge in other countries because of exploitation in Zimbabwe.

The government of Zimbabwe must act immediately to bring about some positive changes or simply resign.
