Neko Kelly’s Rocstar Beauty launches
Fashion stylist and creative director Neko Kelly is no stranger to helping people look and feel good. Now, he is ready to do so in a fresh way with the launch of his new skincare line – Rocstar Beauty.
Speaking with The Gleaner, Kelly, who goes by the moniker ‘Bootleg Rocstar’, says the decision to venture into the skincare industry came naturally as he has always been a beauty fanatic, and the skin, after all, is the largest organ of the body and should be well taken care of.
“I’ve been a super skincare enthusiast since early high school,” he expressed.
“Any solution to a skin problem that exists, best believe I can figure it out by experimenting and researching. Years later, with a lot more maturity, knowledge, passion, and resources, I’ve decided now is the best time to merge my enthusiasm with my entrepreneurialism,” he continued.
Kelly’s clean, vegan-friendly, and cruelty-free skincare line launches with four key products, which he describes as “must-haves” and the most important steps of any solid skincare routine. These would include the Rocstar Beauty milk cleanser, toner, moisturiser, and body butter.
The benefits of the products comprise purifying, soothing, and healing skin, helping to reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and lock in moisture.
For him, it was a tactical decision to launch with these products; however, he has plans to expand the line in the future.
“It was important for me to start with the basics or foundation of a great skincare routine, which are the three most important steps; cleanse, tone, and moisturise. I added the body butter to the three steps and made it four because, too often, we neglect the rest of our body and only focus on the face,” he explained.
“I have a lot of products and product collections coming out soon, which I am eager to unfold. Skincare is never-ending, and there are so many skin problems that I can and will offer solutions for. The brand will be hosting a slew of different products very soon,” he continued.
Understanding how complex and dynamic skin is, Kelly promises that the products will work well for all skin types, and that it was important for him to create formulas that could do so.
“Everyone’s skin is different, this is why I believe I formulated products that offer everyone a solution to their skin issues. I personally adore the cleanser and toner. Those two are the MVPs (most valuable players). Months before launch, I gave a few friends samples of each product, and everyone raved about how those two improved their skin, and all had different skin types and skin problems, so I am sure those two are going to be everyone’s fave (favourite),” said an enthusiastic Kelly.
The journey to launching Rocstar Beauty has not been tear-free. The campaign photos were shot over two years ago. According to Kelly, it took him over three years, a pandemic, and many trials and errors before he and his team came up with the winning formulas. Nevertheless, for him, the focus was ensuring that this products would produce the desired results.
“It was not until a year ago that I found a new certified cosmetic chemist, who created everything perfectly. We went back and forth for a little over a year, testing textures, scents, and ingredients with different benefits. I am amazed at all the work, experimentation, and thought process that it took to find the perfect formulas,” Kelly told The Gleaner.
“My focus was really to make sure that the products work. Forget everything else for a minute, focus on the actual purpose of a skincare product and make sure it does its job. That was my goal through it all, and I’m proud to say I accomplished that goal.”
Even though Kelly dedicated a lot of time to create the perfect products, as well as delivering the best packaging that would represent his already-established personal brand, he says the line remains affordable and targets anyone interested in good skin.
“I know first-hand how expensive skincare can be, and the painful financial keeping up as well. My products range from $2,800 to $4,000, which is pretty affordable. My skincare caters to people who want to see positive results from good skincare. That’s my audience, because that is what I offer.”
The beauty industry is one of the most supported worldwide, as many people are increasingly becoming more interested and invested in self-care. The multibillion-dollar industry sees several new skincare brands on the shelves yearly, touted by celebrities and entrepreneurs. But Kelly says his line is ageless because the focus is not on achieving perfection.
“Rocstar Beauty is different because it penetrates deeper than the skin. It penetrates minds and perspectives. It’s a brand that offers skin solutions and, at the same time, is challenging the stereotypical ideas and standards of beauty. Representation of all skin types, body types, and gender identity are important to me. Rocstar Beauty is skincare that actually cares.”
Rocstar Beauty skincare line will be exclusively available on rocstarbeauty.com, and he is eagerly anticipating the response from his customers.
“I’m looking forward to everyone’s honest feedback on the products. I am also excited to see update pictures of their skin after using the products,” he said.
“Self-care in any form should always be important. Whether it be a skincare product that gives you the confidence to take on the world, or a spa day that positively improves your mental health. I am all for it.”
