The SANTA Charity Golf Tournament at Constant Spring Golf Club wrapped up 2014 by donating $2.16 million to local charities.

The SANTA initiative went one step further this year by signing an memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Citizen Security and Justice Programme (CSJP) that will have long-term beneficial impact on at-risk youth in Jamaica. The event is held under the distinguished patronage of the British High Commissioner, David Fitton, who was there for the charitable presentations as well as distribution of prizes to the top golfers. These included overall grand prize winner Gregory Mayne. This years 14th anniversary of SANTA was a family affair that proved to be a winning combination of sport, charity, fun and celebration.

SANTA, which stands for Seeing A Need, Taking Action, teed off with a cocktail party at the Constant Spring Golf Club on Friday, December 5. In addition to registering participants and a putt and chip competition, the evening served as a backdrop for the signing of the important agreement. Nigel Davy, of the Constant Spring Golf Club, and Simeon Robinson of CSJP, a programme of the Ministry of National Security, signed the MOU between SANTA Charity Golfing event and CSJP. It is set to benefit youth from 18 inner-city communities including Grants Pen, Whitehall Avenue, Maverly and Elletson Road.

Life skills

"Golf will give these youngsters an opportunity to learn new life skills, about each other, and learn discipline to achieve life goals," said Patrice Tomlinson Nephew, communications manager at CSJP. She said golf was chosen to help diversify the experiences of these youth and help them gain entry to other socio-economic segments.

The SANTA Charity Golfing Event truly embodied the spirit of the season with almost 200 participants golfing for a good cause over the weekend. They were able to see the fruit of their efforts in a Sunday evening social, on December 7, when cheques were presented to: Boys Town; Laws Street Trade Training Centre; Mustard Seed; Wortley Home; Peace and Love in Society and the Jamaica Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Stephen Facey of CB Facey Foundation which is the charitable arm of the Pan-Jamaican Investment Group, shared that SANTA gives us all an opportunity to collaborate through a unique partnership that fuses both entertainment and social investment.

This year, the Pan Jamaica Investment group invited some of their associated companies to join this initiative. These include: Walkerswood, Busha Browne, Jablum, Blue Mountain Aromatics, Sagicor and Chukka Cove. SANTA Charity Golfing Event, Jamaica's premier and largest amateur golf charity tournament, continues to be a winning combination of sport, charity, fun and celebration!
