Banned lawyer charged with fraud
A lawyer who has been barred from practising in Jamaica has become the latest member of the legal fraternity to be charged with fraud.
The police say 56-year-old Akin Adaranaja, of Elletson Flats in St Andrew, was arrested and charged for fraudulent conversion on Monday.
He is scheduled to appear before the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate’s Court on May 14.
The police say Adaranaja was entrusted with a $1-million deposit for a parcel of land by a client.
However, it is reported that the client later discovered that the lawyer was barred from practicing law in Jamaica.
The police say after several failed attempts to get a refund, a report was made to the Fraud Squad.
The General Legal Council barred Adaranaja from practising as a lawyer here in November 2013.
He was found guilty of professional misconduct after he failed to account for $4 million in a land deal.
