Commish: 'I was joking, you can't ask a commissioner to rate himself'

Police Commissioner, Dr Carl Williams, says he was joking when he gave himself a perfect score for his performance for the 10 months he has been leading the Jamaica Constabulary Force.

Asked on Monday at a press conference to rate his performance, the Commissioner gave himself a 10 out of 10, even as he confirmed a 19 per cent increase in murders this year compared to the similar period last year.

Williams is being severely criticised for the rating with one human rights campaigner, Horace Levy, saying all the Commissioner has done is talk.

However, Williams told The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre this morning he was not serious when he gave the response. 

He adds that it was not his place to rate his performance as a commissioner. 

Williams had laughed while responding to the journalist who asked him to rate his performance.

Some civil society groups have come out against some of the criticisms, saying the commissioner must be given all the support he requires to meet his objectives. 

Williams was appointed commissioner in September last year.
