Allison Bowes, vice-principal of St Andrew High School for girls (forefront) joins other mourners as they sang during the thanksgiving service for Hermel Evans yesterday.

Hermel Evans was eulogised as a distinguished educator, a dedicated servant of God, and a loving mother and grandmother as family members and friends gathered for a service of thanksgiving for her life at the Webster Memorial United Church in St Andrew yesterday.

Having spent more than 23 years of her life nurturing young minds at the St Andrew High School for Girls, it was not unexpected that several persons from that family were out to pay tribute to the woman who resigned in 1990 but returned when she was summoned to prepare the young ladies for external exams.

Vice-principal of St Andrew High, Allison Bowes, who presented tribute on behalf of the school, described Evans' service as extraordinary.

Several other tributes were paid to the extraordinary woman who was the mother of three - Teino, an editor at The Gleaner; Rory and Aneika - and a grandmother to four.
