PM to address the nation tonight
The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller will address the nation later this evening on the PetroCaribe oil deal with Venezuela.
The address comes a week after the finance ministry reported that it had raised $2 billion on the international capital market, to buyback some of the debt accumulated under the PetroCaribe deal.
The development has fuelled calls for the government to push for a review of some of the tough measures under the programme with the International Monetary Fund.
The Prime Minister's expected address also comes amid drawn out public sector wage negotiations, a 20 percent increase in murders and a crippling drought.
On the weekend, Simpson Miller's People's National Party, admitted that it was worried about the current water issues, youth unemployment and poor road conditions as the election period draws closer.
This afternoon, Minister with Responsibility for Information, Senator Sandrea Falconer, could not be reached to respond to questions about the Prime Minister's expected broadcast to the nation.
However, a source at the Office of the Prime Minister, said the broadcast is being planned for 8 o'clock tonight.
Radio and television stations have reportedly been put on standby.
