The Kingston western police are yet to name the man who was shot dead yesterday in the Coronation Market in downtown Kingston.

The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that the man is in his mid-twenties and goes by the alias 'Poppy'.

It is reported that he was from Chestnut Lane in the Denham Town community of western Kingston.

Meanwhile, it has emerged that the man was killed allegedly by a licensed firearm holder after he attempted to hold up and rob patrons at the market.

An alleged accomplice was shot and injured as well.

His condition is not known.

The police have reported that there has been an increase in crime and violence in the Kingston Western police division.

They say gang feuds have been causing much of the violence.
