Security in Ocho Rios has been boosted with the official handing over of a closed circuit television (CCTV) system to the Ocho Rios police by the Ministries of Tourism and Entertainment and National Security.

The system, valued at $107 million, comes equipped with 36 cameras placed at strategic locations across the resort town.

Head of the Modernisation Initiatives and Strategic Projects at the Ministry of National Security, Dr Canute Thompson, says additional cameras will be added to the system over time.

The system will be operated by 12 district constables who have been trained in its operation.

Chairman of the Ocho Rios Resort Board, Dr Roosevelt Crooks, also handed over a motorbike to the police, for use by the response team.

The system benefited from a $57-million contribution from the Tourism Enhancement Fund with the Ministry of National Security providing the rest.

Ocho Rios joins Montego Bay, May Pen and Mandeville as towns where CCTV surveillance has been installed.

The CCTV system is expected to assist in reducing harassment and criminal activities in Ocho Rios.

He said with the system now in Ocho Rios, it will provide multiple benefits to the community.
