Evon Redman leads as his supporters celebrate his victory in North East St Elizabeth.

People's National Party (PNP) delegates in North East St Elizabeth have voted overwhelmingly for businessman Evon Redman to be the party's representative in the next general elections.

During an affirmation exercise held at the Santa Cruz Primary School today, 339 of the 469 eligible delegates voted in Redman's favour.

Some 127 delegates voted against his candidacy.

Speaking to The Gleaner after the vote, Redman said the victory was the result of hard work.

The St Elizabeth businessman also indicated that he had to overcome several "challenges".

Redman was expected to face incumbent Raymond Pryce, but the MP withdrew his candidacy just over a week ago‎.

Pryce's withdrawal coincided with a court challenge filed by one of his supporters against Redman, saying the aspirant's membership did not meet the requirements of the PNP's constitution.
