Representatives from the various public health departments are now sanitising a number of schools affected by the outbreak of the Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease.

That’s the word from Health Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson as the government moves to contain the spread of the virus.

The health ministry has confirmed that up to last Wednesday 58 early childhood institutions and 123 students in Kingston, St Andrew, St Catherine, St Thomas and Portland were affected by the virus.

Ferguson says where necessary public health department officials will decide on the closure of any institution affected by the outbreak.

He also reminded school administrators that they should immediately send home students who display symptoms of the disease and adds that in confirmed cases the child should stay home for at least a week.
