The National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) is to get 17 new compactor trucks to help ease the backlog in garbage collection.
Minister with responsibility for information, Senator Sandrea Falconer, says the Cabinet has approved the award of a contract to acquire the vehicles.
She says the NSWMA currently has a fleet of 52 units, but is required to have 172.
According to Senator Falconer, since 2013 the NSWMA has been using sub-contractors to help collect garbage.
She says the NSWMA only has access to about 126 trucks.
