Almost one year ago, Newton Cole started feeling immense pain in his abdomen. A quick visit to the doctor revealed that he had a benign tumour in his colon. However, in May of this year when the excruciating pain continued, Cole revisited his doctor where it was discovered that the tumour was in fact cancerous and needed immediate attention.

"Initially, the news was really devastating. But I am a firm believer in God and I did not allow the situation to get me depressed. I started chemotherapy at first in an attempt to shrink the tumour, but as the pain continued I underwent surgery to remove it," Cole said.

With the insurmountable costs for the surgery, follow-up visits and medication, Cole is happy that he signed up for the Paymaster Loyalty Rewards Programme. Cole, who normally pays his bills at the Paymaster location at Lee's Food Fair, Red Hills Road, saw the flyers advertising the rewards programme and became intrigued by the prospects.

"I received a temporary card when I signed up for the permanent card. I feel really grateful because I didn't know it would really work. At times, companies have promotions and when it gets down to the crunch, they do not live up to expectations. But Paymaster did it," Cole said.

Chemotherapy, he said, is quite costly as, with insurance coverage, he pays up to $9,000 per treatment, which is done once every three weeks. One of his medications without insurance costs up to $90,000 and these, he said, are just tablets. However, thankfully with insurance coverage and help from the supplier, the cost has been significantly reduced.

"I would really encourage persons to sign up. As the slogan says, it really pays to pay at Paymaster," Cole said.

The Paymaster Shield is underwritten by Sagicor Life Insurance and covers critical illnesses and death. It provides a lump-sum payout in the event of being diagnosed with any of the illnesses covered, including heart attack, stroke, cancer and paralysis.

Customers become eligible for this and other benefits after paying three or more bills at any Paymaster location, islandwide, for three consecutive months. On completion of a full membership form and qualifying as members, customers will receive the free Paymaster Shield Insurance for $150,000 with the ability to upgrade the coverage up to a total of $1,000,000.

According to Natalie St Louis, Paymaster's vice-president of marketing, sales, client and corporate services, "We feel privileged to make such a positive and impactful difference in the lives of our customers, especially in these challenging economic times.

In addition to the Paymaster Shield, Paymaster will also waive for six months its service charge when Cole pays any two bills at any Paymaster location islandwide.
