JLP, PNP supporters gather for mass rallies in Spanish Town, Brown's Town

Supporters of the two major political parties are gathering in St Ann and St Catherine where mass rallies are being staged as preparations gain momentum for the impending general elections.

The governing People's National Party (PNP) is heading to Brown's Town in St Ann where they will meet with supporters in the north western constituency of Member of Parliament Dayton Campbell.

Party supporters will be addressed by Finance Minister and PNP Vice President Dr Peter Phillips, as well as Prime Minister and PNP President Portia Simpson Miller. The meeting is expected to get under way at 6 p.m.

And the Opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) is gathering in Munamar Square in the old capital Spanish Town. The meeting is expected to commence at 6:00 this evening. Opposition Leader Andrew Holness will be the main speaker.      

The race to form the next government is tight, with the latest polls showing both the JLP and PNP in a statistical tie.

The JLP enjoys 26 per cent of voter support and the PNP 27 per cent, according to the latest Bill Johnson polls. However, the PNP at this time has the advantage, having gained 12 percentage points since the last poll in October last year.
