$76m upgrade work planned for Linstead Hospital

The government is to spend more than $76 million to renovate and expand the Accident and Emergency (A&E) Department at the Linstead Hospital in St Catherine.
Ground was officially broken yesterday to mark the start of the project.
The Ministry of Health says the work on the A&E department will result in the addition of a waiting area, parking area, nebulisation station, examination bays and triage area.
The ambulance bay will also be realigned.
The ministry says the project is part of a bigger one valued at $100 million to renovate, expand and equip and install a heating ventilation and air conditioning system for the A&E department.
It says the project is expected to be completed in about 12 months.
Funding was provided by the National Health Fund.
Meanwhile, the health ministry points out that the hospital’s Administrative Building is currently being refurbished at a cost of $21.6 million.
It notes that the Linstead hospital is a major referral centre for the Spanish Town, Kingston Public, National Chest hospitals and the Bustamante Hospital for Children.
The facility sees about 30,000 patients annually.
