New voters' list to be published today

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) is expected to release the latest national voters' list today with at least 30,000 more new electors when compared with the last list.

The EOJ publishes a list of eligible voters every six months on May 31 and November 30.

A total of 1,790,039 people were on the last list.

However, there was a push to register more people in time for the new list because of speculations that Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller would have called elections this year.

Last week, Simpson Miller announced Jamaica would not go to the polls on the May voters' list.

She said Jamaica's youth should be given an equal opportunity to have a say in the way their country is governed.

It's believed that most of the newly registered voters are young people.

The Jamaica Labour Party had called on the Prime Minister not to call elections until the November list is published.
