The police have reportedly detained more than 20 people in a joint police-military operation in Newlands, Portmore, St Catherine following two killings said to be politically motivated.

Sadie Forbes, a resident of Newlands, was shot dead on Tuesday night by gunmen who reportedly drove up beside her and opened fire while she was walking on the Newlands Road.

She had earlier complained to the police about the erection of party flags in the community.

Thirty-one-year-old Nicholas Vassell was subsequently stabbed to death in what some residents believe was a reprisal killing.

Meanwhile, Political Ombudsman Donna Parchment Brown has moved to stem any further violent flare-ups in Newlands.

Yesterday, Parchment Brown met with the general secretaries of the People’s National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) in an effort to cool tensions in the East Central St Catherine constituency.
