Prime Minister Portia Simpson Miller says the Government is working towards an April 1 date for district constables to become pensionable and eligible for other benefits for government workers.
According to Simpson Miller, the Cabinet has approved the move and only the legislative framework is now needed.
She says instructions have been given to the Chief Parliamentary Counsel to draft the legislation.
District constables have consistently lobbied the National Security Minister as well as the Finance Minister for improved benefits.
More than 2,400 district constables now work in Jamaica – the highest ever.
They are now all identifiable by their uniforms.
