Blood donors to be screened for ZIKA

People who have had the Zika virus (ZIKA) are being cautioned to wait four to six weeks before donating blood.

Speaking with The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre this morning, Chief Medical Officer, Dr Winston De La Haye, said the instruction is in keeping with international standards.

However, Dr De La Haye says a screening process will still be done to determine whether people are fit enough to give blood.

He says this process will help to ensure that persons who may have had the virus, but were not diagnosed, do not give blood during the danger period.
