Jamaica Customs warns of email scam

Published:Friday | September 23, 2016 | 10:45 AM

The Jamaica Customs Agency is alerting the public of an email scam purporting to be from Commissioner of Customs, Major Richard Reese.

In the email, the scammers seek to inform people of the sale of motor vehicles that are allegedly being auctioned by the Commissioner.

The Customs Agency says the fraudulent email is sent from the address reeserr4@gmail.com and contains information regarding payment details, deadlines for payment and processing of paperwork, and a bank account number.

According to the Customs Agency, all Public Auctions are advertised in the newspapers 30 days before the date of the auction and all payments must be paid directly at the Jamaica Customs Agency cashier on the day of the auction.

The Customs Agency also says all cheques must also be written in the name ‘Collector of Customs’.

As a result, at no time should persons make payments to any person or entity other than the Customs Agency.
