JUTC willing to comply with new tinting regulations

The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says it will comply with the removal-of-tinting directive from the Government and have its buses satisfy the new regulations.

The Government last week announced a raft of measures, including the removal of certain grades of tint from public- passenger vehicles, amid heightening concerns for passenger safety.

Reginald Allen, marketing and communications manager at the JUTC, said while the removal of tints was a difficult exercise, the state-owned company was committed to being compliant. “It is very, very difficult, but we are looking at a few measures over time, including special security arrangements for those buses [that will take time to get regularised],” Allen told The Gleaner.

Quizzed on the costing involved in getting the JUTC compliant, Allen stated that “the cost to replace those is really huge. It is somewhat impractical but that does not mean we have any intention of disregarding the requirements of the Government”.

The communications manager also pointed out that the JUTC will be seeking further information from the Government on the new measures because advertisements placed on its buses could be affected.

He noted that the JUTC has been granted a period of 12 months to adjust to the new measures which the Government is convinced will help to quell the fears of many resulting from reports of the kidnapping and killing of women and children in recent times.
