Some residents in West Albion, St Thomas are fearful that their health may be compromised with what they say is the discovery of a large quantity of asbestos material on properties around the area.

Secretary of the West Albion Estate Benevolent Society, Andrea Phillips, told our news centre that asbestos has been found on various lots inside the community.

Asbestos, when exposed over a long period, has been found to cause lung cancer.

Phillips says a quantity of the toxic material was found some five years ago and it was reported and a clean-up was carried out.

However, she says more of the toxic substance has now been found. It has since been reported.

The site of the West Albion community was once used as a flower farm before it was developed into a housing scheme 20 years ago.

As a consequence, she says people have been reselling their properties due to the health risks.

Phillips is therefore calling on the relevant authorities to move speedily to remove the remaining toxic substance.
