Accountant Gary Nicholson has won the crucial Greater Portmore North by-election for the People's National Party (PNP) to maintain control of the St Catherine Municipal Corporation.

Nicholson polled 2,125 votes to the 995 by his Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) contender Ann Lewis.

A win for the JLP would have broken the 20-20 deadlock in the St Catherine Municipal Corporation and see it taking control of the Corporation.

The PNP had won the corporation 21-20 in the local government election.

But with the death of its Greater Portmore North Councillor Michael Edwards, the seat count was left tied.

Preliminary analysis showed that voter turnout was just over 22.39 per cent.
