British man held on drug charges

Detectives assigned to the Narcotics Division have arrested and charged a British man for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act at the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston.

He is 41-year-old Desmond Llewelyn Winter, a Telecom and Information Technology Engineer of Marvell House, South London, England.

He is charged with possession of ganja, dealing in ganja and attempting to export ganja.

Reports are that about 12:10 yesterday afternoon Winter was at the security check point to board a flight destined for London, Gatwick when he was accosted and searched.

During the search of his luggage, 38 rectangular shaped parcels were reportedly found.

Each reportedly contained compressed vegetable matter resembling ganja, weighing a total of 28 pounds.

The ganja has an estimated street value of $142,000.

Winter was subsequently taken into custody.
