Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton has indicated that the Government is working to establish a National Health Insurance Scheme this year.

Tufton said consultants from the World Health Organisation and the Pan American Health Organisation have generated an initial report looking at options for Jamaica.

He said the ministry is now in the process of recruiting another internationally experienced consultant who will work with the committee that is overseeing the process.

While indicating that the Government had no intention of reversing its policy of universal access of health care to all Jamaicans, Tufton noted that Jamaicans should contribute to their health costs if they are in a position to do so.
