Taxi operators are to be allowed to import vehicles that are up to eight years old.

Industry and commerce minister, Karl Samuda made the announcement while speaking in the sectoral debate in parliament this afternoon.

The current limit is five years.

Samuda said some 90 per cent of taxis in Jamaica are over 15 years old.

He said this has implications for the comfort, safety and security of passengers.

He also said the new policy will allow taxi operators to upgrade their vehicles.
