Coombs on a frolic of his own – Health Ministry

The Ministry of Health has moved to distance itself from a claim Dr Michael Coombs, Regional Technical Director of the South Regional Health Authority,  that poor family structure and instability are fuelling the scourge of domestic violence plaguing the society given that traditional marriages are on the decline, and cohabitation on the increase.

“The Ministry of Health would like to advise everyone that a recent article in The Gleaner with the headline ‘Rise in common law unions fuelling domestic violence – Health Ministry’ is not the position of the ministry.”

“The statements were made by Dr Coombs who gave his personal views on the effect of poor family structures on domestic violence in our society,” said the ministry.

It noted that the article captured a town hall meeting on domestic violence which was chaired by Coombs.

He had used the meeting to argue that Jamaica’s national response to domestic violence needs to go beyond punitive measures for perpetrators and education, detection, treatment and support for victims, to promoting healthy parental marriage, especially among its youth.
