Agriculture Minister Karl Samuda has sought to dispel doubts about climate change, telling the international community climate change is not fiction, but a daily reality in Jamaica.

Speaking this morning at the 40th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Conference in Rome, Italy, he said there is urgent need to address climate change and its impact.

Samuda notes that agriculture is making a significant contribution to national development, but that the challenges to the sector due to climate change have been significant.

Samuda points to the recent rains which he says left about a billion dollars in crop losses.

He says Jamaica is seeking to build resilience in the agricultural sector given its importance to ensuring food security.

However, Samuda argues that Jamaica cannot succeed in addressing the challenge of climate change without global action.

He has urged the FAO to continue its efforts in this area.
