OUR suspends probe into Digicel's maintenance fee after company indefinitely halts charge

The Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) says it has suspended its investigation into the Prepaid Maintenance Fee charged by Digicel because the company has indefinitely halted the charge.

Digicel had been levying a fee of $15 on customers who spend less than $50 per month.

Its decision to halt charging the fee comes after the OUR requested that it explain the reason for the charge and provide evidence that it had given customers adequate notice of the new charge.

Digicel had started levying the fee on June 22.

In a statement this morning, the OUR said Digicel admitted that it had not given customers adequate notice of the fee.

The OUR says the telecoms claimed it had posted the notice on its website and updated its Terms of Use policy to reflect the new fee.

In the meantime, the OUR says Digicel has indicated that those customers who were charged have already been reimbursed.
