Opposition welcomes toll roll back

Opposition Spokesman on Transport, Mikael Phillips, is welcoming the decision of Transport Minister, Mike Henry, to roll back the toll rate increase granted to the operators of the North South Highway amid a coin shortage.

Henry conceded to public outcry after the ministry said it would allow the temporary rates to remain despite the ease in the shortage.

The toll rates on the highway were rounded up to the nearest paper note in April after a coin shortage created problems for the operators of the highway to provide change.

Henry said that he had given a commitment to rolling back the rate increase when the coin shortage eases and will honour that commitment.

The roll back should be effective this weekend.

The opposition spokesman says he’s glad that good sense has prevailed.

Phillips says it is unfortunate that the Government had to be pressured into doing what is right for the Jamaican people.
