The National Health Fund (NHF) is to revamp its Vital, Essential and Necessary drug list as part of cost saving measures.

Health Minister, Dr Christopher Tufton, says the Pan American Health Organisation will assist in developing a benchmark that guides the purchasing of medications to treat various ailments.

He said with the new benchmark, there will be up to 25 per cent cost saving.

The minister said the NHF currently has over 1,000 categories drugs on its list with 60 treating each ailment for which clients source medication.

Tufton also said the NHF has been instructed to expand its pharmacy outlets to further boost client service delivery and has announced that a national health insurance policy is to be introduced next year.

The minister said the NHF will play a pivotal role in the development of the policy adding that details are expected to be unveiled by the 2018/19 fiscal year.
