The Cross Roads tax office is to remain closed until technicians complete a thorough security check and rule that it is safe for operations to resume there.

Shortly after opening this morning, the building had to be evacuated because smoke was detected coming from an air conditioning unit on the first floor.

Firefighters, who were quick on the scene, say the smoke was caused by an electrical fire inside the unit.

The fire was soon put out and firefighters, along with security personnel, are now conducting a search of the building to ensure that it is safe for employees to return.

However, one firefighter has indicated that employees will not be allowed to re-enter the building until technicians are able to complete a thorough check of the a/c system.

Several employees are now gathered in a parking lot opposite the building.
