Phillips gets support on 'Jamaica first' ideas
The Opposition leader is getting support on his thrust to reposition government policies so that Jamaica and Jamaicans get priority, especially where awarding contracts for goods and services are concerned.
Political Commentator, Kevin O'Brien Chang, says Dr Peter Phillips needed to have addressed the issue given the controversy surrounding Jamaican contractors being sidelined in favour of foreign contractors on local projects.
Chang says there is definitely a fear in Jamaica that the Chinese are taking over aspects of the economy.
Overall, Chang says the opposition leader's address was good as he asked several pertinent questions on topical issues, as well as putting forward a number of new policies that he would pursue should he form the next government.
On the issue of changing the electoral laws to prescribe a specified period for the holding of by-elections, Chang says he's in total agreement.
He says the holding of a by-election should not be at the behest of a prime minister.
