Caroline Victoria Miles: educator extraordinaire
SEAFORTH, St Thomas:
Whosoever said that the best teachers teach from the heart not the book must have known Caroline Victoria Miles, visual-arts instructor at Seaforth High School in St Thomas.
With some 26 years of experience and excellence in service to education under her belt and much awards to show, Miles told The Gleaner that teaching, for her, is innate.
"I chose this career because as a child, I always wanted to teach basic school and to draw charts - the 'A' for 'apple' and 'B' for 'ball' type of charts," she said as she spoke about the profession that combines her two loves, art and education.
Her involvement in the classroom is nothing short of impressive, and going beyond the call of duty, the diligent educator, who is also an extraordinary artist, has what she calls an 'open-home policy', which sees her having extra classes at her house to assist students, a trait which, according her, was adopted from her mentor and former high school art teacher, Michael Coates.
With more than 10 awards for her service, including the Excellence in Teaching and Teacher of the Year awards from the Ministry of Education, Miles has steadily maintained a 100 per cent pass rate among her students.
The A-class facilitator noted that teaching does a lot for her, too.
According to her: "It gives me a sense of fulfilment and accomplishment. I come alive when teaching, and I'm taken to a whole other realm, especially when a child has learned a technique or methodology."
And in her proven expertise, Miles shared what she has found to be the three most important qualities of a good teacher.
"One, patience to deal with students, and two, love for the profession. I make my job my joy because when you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.
"The third quality is discipline or 'sticktoitivity'. This is to ensure that each objective or goal is met," she said, in keeping with one of her philosophies in education: 'If a child cannot learn the way you teach, teach the way he learns'.
